Part 84: Paralogue 18: The Dead King's Lament - Battle

Paralogue 18 Battle

Party is mostly the same as the one that defeated Grima. Olivia is back with the team for a bit, which is nice since a second action is better than another killer at this point.

This is a Kill Commander-type map, but since there's only 34 enemies and no reinforcements, you might as well kill everything.

Flavia (With Basalio), Henry (with Owain), and Gregor (with Nah) will bait out those Berserkers.

Easy enough for the Khans.

Flavia learns Axebreaker, which makes her quite an undesirable target for the rest of those Zerkers.

Of course, it's not like Gregor's a slouch. At least he can double these enemies.

Henry's definitely not doubling an Assassin even with Rally Spectrum, so Owain's helping out with a quick sword slash.

Sadly Gregor can't seem to double Zerks without Rally Spectrum, so Yarne comes in and snipes to finish the Ruffian.

Flavia decided she doesn't want to help, but Henry is generous to bathe in the bloodshed.

Brady pulls Henry back with Rescue, then the Ylissean royals get in front to handle the next swarm.

What kind of scrub can't even get 20% in a weapon triangle?

Striking down an Assassin boosts Chrom's speed and some needed resistance.

Chrom kills off an attacking Sage before the rest of the enemies advance.

Yarne safely gets his target to a weakened condition, which Henry feasts on his essence.

Some easy beatdowns to clear the skies a bit. Gerome gets to level 13 (+1 HP/Skill/Spd/Def).

A couple quick kills via Brave Weapons, though surprising that Gregor could get in 4 hits against Snipers.

Robin has no such trouble on doubling a bunch of Ruffians. Olivia gets some speed after giving a Dance to the Ylissean royals.

An inspired shockery to his systems.

Brady Rescues Robin to end the turn.

Most of next turn was spent moving the team just outside the danger zone, with Nah taking camp on a fort. Even with her Dragonstone unequipped, she's more than tough enough solo the wave.

See? Perfectly fine.

Robin starts the pruning on some annoying weeds.

Basilio continues to build bow rank and some stats, this time finally learning Counter for realsies.

Most of the villages here have been razed to the ground. Hundred have died. ...Here. Take this and return the favor. Make them pay for what they've done!

The lone village gives a Seraph Robe. Not much use for it if you're already near the game.

Brady, after a Dance, Rescues Robin out of danger and Henry manipulates Basilio's inventory so no one can counterattack.

Owain sheds some light on the cloaked Assassin, gaining some combat stats and a permanent boost to his power by learning Aggressor. Anathema takes a bench seat since the extra critical isn't needed anymore.

Noire gets a nice crit to eliminate her target. Brady Rescues Owain from killing everything by accident (Brady level: +1 HP/Str. Bleh)

With Aggressor, Owain's relatively weak magic is boosted to a powerful option instead of something for kicks.

Morgan activates Ignis a couple times to power through the Sage's great resistance (Morgan level: +1 Skill/Spd/Lck/Res).

Nah got bored, okay?

Gerome clears the last enemy trapped in the mountain passage, except Gangrel of course.

Chrom decides to chat up the former King for a bit.

...Gangrel is dead. Nothing but maggots here. (leaves)

Wait! Gangrel! That's the Mad King... I'm sure of it.

That was very rude, even for a Mad King

He could very easily fall to Chrom's blade twice in one lifetime.

But....

Alive? No, Chrom. This is not living...

You killed me once, dear prince. Now I would beg you do so again. My life is over, but my body refuses to accept it.

Gods, listen to you... Is this truly the same Mad King who stood against us?

Tear out everything that makes a man, and all you're left with is a husk. No throne. No gold. No men... I scrub chamber pots for brigands. Ah, how the mighty have fallen...

Ironic that you, of all people, are finally learning about long falls.

Heh. Seems I'm not the only one who's changed, dear prince. Days past, you'd have sheathed your blade in my chest by now. Perhaps you're less of your father and more of your sister than I thought...

Your crimes are beyond forgiveness.

But indeed, Emmeryn had a profound effect on me, in most every way. My only charge now is to save this world. I have no time for vendetta.

How very gracious of you.

Enough, Gangrel. What little life you still have is wasted here.

I can offer you a higher purpose... You could fight for us.

Heh... NOW who's the mad king?

I told you, I have no time for vendetta. Defeating Grima is all that matters. And while killing you here would please me greatly, it'd put me no closer to that goal. Since you're no longer my enemy, I'd sooner put you to use than see you rot.

You've changed, little prince. I'm almost disappointed.

Still, I suppose this is what true leadership looks like...

I'd have your answer, Gangrel.

...... It was a lovely speech, but I'll pass. I'm just not the sort to play at hope and justice.

If killing me would please you greatly, I'll not deny your satisfaction. Come, boy. Do an old king one last favor and end this charade now.

Gladly.

Of course, annoying Gangrel is probably the bigger dick move for which I support.

You talk of slaying gods, but you're too soft to end one sorry little man?

What are you waiting for?! Do it! I give you my head on a silver platter!

You're pathetic.

...Wh-what?

You're not even worth killing. Not like this. Your death would hold no meaning at all.

You smug little—

Either we end Grima, or Grima ends us. And that includes your Plegian citizens. If you would throw your life away, throw it at Grima! Die with sword in hand, not begging like some craven rat with its foot in a trap! You were a king once. Now suck up your self-pity, and die for your people!

Graaagh! Gods, but I despise you! Every word and every action of yours makes me want to paint the walls with my lunch!

Then you would stay here to rot in—

Look, I've never sworn an oath in my life, much less thought to keep one...

But what little life I have remaining is yours. Dragons, gods...throw me at what you will.

So...Gangrel. He's fast and comes with a free Levin Sword. Mechanically, not worth it for the very specific and tedious requirement to have Chrom talk to him 3 times while no one kill him in the meantime.

He comes with both Trickster skills learned at least, so he can be changed into a different class without loss. If it's even worth the 2500 to Second Seal him.

Henry walks ahead to bait out the 3 Wyvern Lords on the far left, hoping to weaken then for the rest of the team.

Of course, Henry decided to crit everything instead

It seems the last few stages have been nothing but smoking Wyverns corpses (Yarne level: +1 HP/Str/Mag/Skill/Def).

I wonder what the process was to create a spell that just casts a giant X to clobber enemies with.

Probably should've given Lucy a wind tome considering her lack of magic punch, but it worked out.

And that's not really helping.

Noire gets the honors to kill the last mook on the map. Brady uses up a Fortify staff to gain another level.

I mean, he does realize he's inside a mountain range right?

Maybe he doesn't.

You can't kill a dead man, sweetheart. Now to feed YOU to the maggots!

Gregor still needs work to do if he's in danger of dying after a Rally Spectrum.

Oh come on, that wasn't even a full brave combo you big baby. Or, dead baby now.

I can see how that 1 extra defense will help you double more enemies.

The boss drops a Large Bullion to end the map.

With the seas open once more, the people here should know a measure of peace.

Thank you, Frederick. We'd best hoist anchor and move on ourselves.

Extras

Gangrel

Abilities:
-Movement +1

-Acrobat

Reclass options: Thief, Barbarian, Dark Mage

Base stats-Hard Mode (Growths)

Str: 26 (55) Lck: 15 (65)
Mag: 25 (45) Def: 18 (30)

Gangrel is definitely what you'd call a fanservice character. I don't know who demanded such redemption or have him as a romance option, but there you go. He's fast and has reclass abilities for critical strikes. And hey, he's a healer so he has uses! ...Right?

Gangrel, like the future paralogue characters, can only have supports with Robin. So that puts him slightly better than spotpass characters.

Official Bio: The wild and ruthless former king of Plegia. He once took sick pleasure in hurting others, but his own life was not easy, and he has shown signs of reform since joining Chrom. The most hopeless acrophobe.
